There’s no better place in Europe to spend your Christmas than wandering through the wonderland of Christmas in Berlin. It’s extremely popular thanks to the delightful atmosphere, the highly decorated streets, and the passion with which the locals celebrate the holidays.
But that’s not even the best part. Throughout the city you’ll find over 80 different Christmas markets to explore. Here’s our favorites that are a little famous, and wonderfully uniquie:
Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus
The Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus is one of the oldest and most charming Christmas markets in Berlin. The different stalls are decorated in the style of the early 1900s, which gives the market a very unique look and feel. Besides the gigantic Ferris wheel and the unique stalls, the Berliner Weihnachtszeit also offers a large 600 square meter ice skating ring, the largest of its kind in Berlin during Christmas. Entry is free but you will have to pay 4 euro if you want to rent skates. This Christmas market has a lot to offer for both young and old visitors.
This market is also a very popular Christmas market for children. Besides the Ferris wheel, there is also a small farm with some friendly animals which children can ride and feed. Children love this and in the meanwhile, the parents can enjoy a nice glühwein. Santa Claus also visits this market three times a day, children can get a photo with him at 16:30, 18:30 and 20:30.
The market is located at Spandauer Straße/Jüdenstraße, and can be reached from the square of Alexanderplatz (U or S-Bahn to station Alexanderplatz). From Alexanderplatz you will need to walk about 400 meters in the direction of the Fernsehturm. The Market runs from 27th November till 30th December 2017, from 11:00 – 22:00 on weekends and 12:00 – 22:00 on weekdays. (Closed on evening of 24th Dec, but open on 25th and 26th December)
Wintertraum am Alexa
Close to the Berliner Weihnachtszeit, and on the other side of Alexanderplatz, you’ll find a Christmas market called Wintertraum am Alexa. It’s located between the Alexa Shopping center and Jannowitzbrucke station. It’s hard to miss it as it’s the most modern Christmas market in Berlin. There’s a large Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, rides and bumper cars. Wintertraum am Alexa is not very traditional but super exciting, and very popular for teenagers. But there’s activities for all ages too, You can still also find the traditional stalls with food, Glühwein and other German delicacies at this Christmas market.
Entrance is free and it runs from 27th November till 23rd December 2017, from 14:00 – 22:00 weekdays and 12:00 – 22:00 on weekends.’
Weihnachtszauber am Gendarmenmarkt
The Weihnachtszauber am Gendarmenmarkt is famous for its unique handmade-products. A variety of manufacturers from across the globe display their talent at this market. You can shop for products like origami, and also many varieties of art. You won’t go hungry with plenty of food-stands and many special delicacies from around the world, most of the stalls will allow you to try the products for free before buying. Locals see it as the most beautiful Christmas market in Berlin, due to the choir that sings there every day/night and the decor.
The market is centrally located at : Leipziger Strasse 65, between three impressive buildings: The Deutsche Dom, the Konzerthaus and the Franzozische Friedrichstadtkirche. It runs from : 27 November till 31 December 2017 (also open on 24,25,26 December), every day from 11:00 till 22:00 (24th December till 6pm)
Entrance fee is 1 Euro compared with other markets that have a free entry, but totally worth it. If you don’t want to pay the entrance fee: During weekdays entry is free until 14.00 (except from 24,25,26 and 31 December). Note that Dogs are not allowed at this Christmas market.
Reaching the market is pretty easy, the closest stations are Stadtmitte and Französische Straße, but you can also walk from the Friedrichstraße station. The market also displays a gigantic Christmas tree, and daily live plays to get the audience into the Christmas mood. This Christmas market also offers a special New Years Eve party on the 31st of December. The party starts at 9pm and the tickets cost only 6 Euro.
The Nikolaiviertel (Mitte) Christmas market
The Nikolaiviertel (Mitte) Christmas market is the perfect market if you want to avoid the crowds of tourists.The square around the romantic Nikolaikirche shows films in the open air, as well as having choir performances every Sunday, offering delicacies such as Jagertee (rum with wine, orange juice and spices), Kinderpunsch (hot mulled non-alcoholic cider), pretzels and crepes.
Locals love this markets because it’s not so well known, small and intimate. Another Romantic, cozy Christmas market is the “unter den Linden.” Entry is free and it runs from 17th November to 1 January 2018. Klosterstraße is the nearest underground station.
Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz
Another great location Christmas market is the Potsdamer Platz, known as “Winterwelt” by the locals. It’s located directly between the large buildings of Potsdamer Platz. Every year an incredible amount of people visit the Winterwelt Christmas market for the activities. Prepare to take a ride down Europe’s largest toboggan with the Potsdamer Platz in the background, and all in the very middle of Berlin. Hang around for the live DJ and après-ski party in the evening. Besides this, the Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz is also known for other activities: You can go ice skating or play a game called Eisstockschießen, a mix between bowling and curling. Even for Berlin this is quite an unique activity and many people want to give it a try. Eisstockschießen costs between 20 and 30 euro per hour (depending on the time of day).
The Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz is the only Christmas market in Berlin which is already open in the beginning of November. So if you love Christmas and already want to get in the right mood in November: then this one is for you. Enjoy the stalls, the different activities and even the live music during the weekends.

The Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace is stunning as the palace is dotted with hundreds of lights all year round, it’s a definite must see. It’s the perfect spot in the city to experience a romantic atmosphere among delightful stalls. Don’t miss a visit to the Palace Gardens, you’ll feel like you’re in a fairy tale!
Locals love the market because the Palace itself is spectacular already and it’s also lit with special lighting during Christmas. The market is a little more classy than the usual Christmas markets, you’ll find food stands that are not available in many other markets in the city.
The market runs from 21st November to 26th December, entry is free, and it can be reached from nearest underground : U-Richard-Wagner-Platz
Weihnachtsmarkt am Gedächtniskirche
The Weihnachtsmarkt am Gedächtniskirche Christmas market is located in the west of the city, a bit further away from the center of Berlin, but it’s still not hard to reach. Take the train to Zoologischer Garten and then you can take a few minutes walk to this Christmas market. You can combine this outing by visiting other attractions that are nearby too : The Gedächtniskirche is an attraction with a very rich history and also Kurfürstendamm is nearby so why not combine this Christmas market with an afternoon of shopping.
The Weihnachtsmarkt am Gedächtniskirche will be organized for the 34th time this year. Last year around 170 stalls could be found between station Zoologischer Garten and the Gedächtniskirche and most of them are quite unique. Items like Christmas decorations, toys, presents and handmade art can be bought here. It also offers a different variety of food and drink from other markets.
If you are visiting Berlin in January this Christmas market is great because it is open till the 7th of January.
Entry is free and it runs from 27th November 2017 till 7th January 2018 (open during Christmas but different opening hours) from 11:00 – 21:00 (Friday and Saturday : 11:00 – 22:00)
Spandau Christmas market
The Spandau Christmas market is located in the old town of Spandau, in the western outskirts of Berlin. The old town gives this market such a unique feel. The Christmas market in Spandau is one of the most traditional and most beautiful in Berlin. Around the St. Nikolai church, a historic market with artisans and craftsmen is set up. Outside this market, fairground people, musicians and entertainers help visitors get into the Christmas spirit. Many of the market stalls are within sight of the tall and festively decorated Christmas tree, vendors offer a variety of Christmas decorations, gifts, foods and drinks all week long. The market is particularly nice for families.
The market is not in the heart of Berlin, but still easy to reach with the S, U Bahn and regional train, it takes only 15 to 20 Minutes from the city centre. Entry is free and it runs from the 27th November till 23rd December 2017, Mon-Thurs 11:00 – 20:00, Fri, Sat, 11:00 – 22:00, Sun 11:00 – 20:00.
